Cafe Time

What makes a cafe a cafe? is it just the food? cannot possibly be... is it just the drinks? nope you need a whole lot more. A true cafe is more than the sum of its parts, it has its coffee, its tea, its wine, its bakery and its food.... but there is much more to it.... for instance a cafe is a place you can come sit down... order an espresso and sip on it for an hour and wait for it to create its black level mark inside the cup before each sip... and not be a completel wacko for doing so.... a cafe must be an ideal place to read, it must be the place to work, it must be the place where you can talk about your existential problems while dealing with your budgetary needs... it must be a place where friends or strangers can sit around a table and feel as htough they are in a meeting on the gravest problems facing humanity. A cafe must have wine... so if you feel that melancholic spell above your horizons you can order a nice bottle of 1985 bordeaux and sip on it without sampling the flavor but enjoying the after effects... it must be a place for people who realize that life hurts, but a good bottle of wine can act as an effective band-aid.... or know that a conversation on the reverse brush stroke utlized extensively by dali was his biggest ingenuous idea is more helpful than talking to yourself about your past....
to sum it up... a cafe can be many things but has to have more warmth and comfort than a resturant... more secluded and private than a bar... softer to sit on, yet assist in the maintainance of correct posture... must include an eclectice crowd of wierdo, preps and average joes... and must must must.... have more varieties of coffee and tea drinks than food items.

i would like to add that a cafe also includs waiters who do not harass you to order or tell you that you have to leave if you don't eat.

a cafe is a place that lets you order bacon and eggs at 10pm on a monday.

a cafe is international...its american counterpart is the diner - a cheap imitation which, like most american imitations, comes off quite weak.

The difference can be spotted everywhere. A cafe has numerous coffee's that taste good. A diner has coffee that has sat in a pot for two hours and is more diluted than my pee.

A cafe will offer a cup of nice tea. A diner will serve freeze dried lipton.

A cafe will ofer an interesting wine from a notable region. A diner will offer something grown in alabama.
But americans don't know the difference. Their tastes cater towards the cheap.

Still, at least NYC offers its share of cafes as well as diners. I just feel sorry for the american midwest, home of the truck stop diner.
